Auction

IPL 2027 Auction: Date, Venue and Rules

The IPL 2027 auction is expected on Wednesday, 16 December 2026, at the ITC Grand in Goa, with a briefing for the teams a day earlier. In September, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the auction would be held in Goa in December. The exact date reached the teams through a BCCI message, so it looks firm, but there is no formal notice yet.

This is the first IPL auction in India since December 2022, when Kochi hosted it. The three auctions after that were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The date also clashes with the second India vs Sri Lanka ODI in Bengaluru, so keep an eye out for any change.

Is IPL 2027 a mega auction?

No. It is a mini auction, and the last one of the 2023 to 2027 cycle. Teams keep most of their squads and use the auction to fill a few gaps. The next mega auction, where squads are rebuilt almost from scratch, is planned before IPL 2028.

Auction rules in short

  • Teams can retain as many players as they like before a mini auction
  • A squad can have up to 25 players, with up to 8 from overseas
  • No Right to Match (RTM) cards, so teams must bid again for players they release
  • The 2027 purse is not announced yet. Each team had ₹125 crore at the 2026 auction
  • The total salary cap for 2027 is reported at ₹157 crore. This covers the purse, performance pay and match fees
  • Start time is not announced. The 2026 auction began at 2:30 PM IST
